Musings on Millennials

“This new generation is entitled, selfish, spoiled and I love it” said the nearly 52 year old Midwestern, suburban, white collar dad.

I am so tired of hearing about those damn millennials and their pesky needs.

Each successive generation replaces the outdated ideas from the previous generation. This used to happen slower over longer periods of time but now because of technology and the meta connected world, cultural changes are happening faster than ever before. Millennials are replacing the norms that no longer suit us. It’s not a hard concept to grasp. Culturally older folks and certain demographics are upset because things are becoming more taboo and norms are being broken. Hello, why exactly are these norms taboo? They are taboo because for years the bigger have exploited the lesser of our people. We are evolving from a win at all cost mentality currently. When the basic struggle for food, shelter and safety from predators is no longer existent we can begin to address the greater societal concerns. The young people of today simply have no need to learn how to ward off a saber tooth tiger but they do need to be taught how to protect themselves from an online predator. We no longer need to learn to plant and tend to our own crops. Would you expect a farmer in 2022 to expect his prayers to a god for a good harvest be more significant than their investment in better seed, fertilizer, pesticides and farming equipment. Instead of bowing to societal, familial or corporate expectations this dang new generation are saying yes to themselves and technological advances. Pandora’s box of knowledge has been opened and you simply cannot expect the young to drink from this fountain of knowledge and not at least attempt to make the world a kinder, gentler place. Then you have the machine, and the machine is not interested in making change that does not suit it’s exploitative nature. How does the machine fight back when they cannot win on principle? It preys on the old, the ignorant and the impressionable. So next time you hear older folks complain about those “damn millennials being so selfish and entitled” realize this, they are speaking from a place of jealousy because their generation was unable to stop the machine and stand up for themselves. It sucks realizing you have been exploited.

In case you did not notice I used single spaces in between sentences except in two cases to emphasize my point of slowly getting rid of things that no longer suit us. See below article.

Isn’t it ironic that I used LibreOffice to write this little musing while also referencing an article about a Microsoft product. Welcome to 2022.

Yours in chaos,

Luis
